You've probably never thought about having your next girls' weekend in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but let me tell you why it's a fantastic option for your next getaway.

I spent a long weekend with my best friend in this city that's been well-known for its university.   Not only did we leave with incredible memories, but Ann Arbor reminded us just how much a city that's rich in traditions can impact your mood and your entire weekend.  As soon as we stepped foot onto Main Street, lined perfectly with red and yellow tulips, we knew we were going to feel right at home.

Once you see my 72-hour itinerary, you'll have everything you need to plan the perfect trip.

Why Ann Arbor?

If you've ever visited a college town, you know that there will be no shortage of incredible places to eat, nightlife, and a buzzing atmosphere.

Ann Arbor is one of those places that will meet you with energy, and the locals will make you feel like you're part of the community.

Below, I'm sharing an interactive map that will pin point our itinerary day by day, along with a written breakdown of all the details of each day.

If you want to follow my exact itinerary, you can use this interactive Google Map to see each place we visited, separated by day.

DAY 1:  Arrival

Getting There:  Atlanta → Ann Arbor

The best way to get to Ann Arbor by plane is to fly into Detroit (DTW).

I live in Atlanta, so it was an incredibly easy trip as there are multiple direct flights.  From there, it's approximately a 30 minute drive to Ann Arbor.

We took a rideshare from the airport to downtown, but you can also rent a car.

Check In:  AC Hotel Downtown

When I select a hotel while traveling, one of the most important features I look for is the location.

I love being close to the action, and the AC Hotel Downtown Ann Arbor is perfect for this.  It's located just blocks from Main Street, so you're steps away from all of the shops, restaurants, and bars.

The AC Hotel Downtown opened in 2026, so it's brand new with modern features and decor.  Their staff was friendly and their hotel bar ended up being one of our favorite parts because their bartenders made us feel so welcome.

Dinner:  Palio Restaurant

Palio is such a unique Italian restaurant, named for the famous horse race that you can witness annually in Siena.

We were lucky to visit on a weekend when Palio was having a special event.  They were putting on a 5-course dinner and wine pairing, meticulously curated by Chef Dimitra Nikolakou.

Every single course of this meal was mouth-watering, and each was perfectly paired with a glass of wine.

If you have the opportunity to visit Palio during a special event, definitely do it.  If there aren't any, I would highly recommend dining there regardless.

Practical Info:   Make a reservation to ensure you get a table.

Evening:  Shopping

One of my favorite things about Ann Arbor is its downtown.  I could walk back and forth on Main Street all day, just popping in and out of all the adorable shops.

My favorite store was Rock, Paper, Scissors because it was full of so many various types of goodies.  It had everything from Michigan and Ann Arbor merch, to hilarious greeting cards, themed products such as Diet Coke and Gilmore Girls, a sock wall, and so much more.  You MUST go in there during your visit.

Night:  Cocktails

We ended our evening with cocktails at an underground Tiki Bar called Hunã.  This speakeasy-style bar was such a fun experience with an incredible vibe.

They have so many unique cocktails to choose from and the ambiance is just mesmerizing; you really feel like you're somewhere completely different than Ann Arbor.

DAY 2: Pilates and a Show

Morning: Breakfast at The Hen

I love finding a solid breakfast spot when I travel and The Hen was the ultimate venue for this in Ann Arbor.

The second we walked in, we could tell it was popular in the community with a line practically out the door.  The interior is adorable and despite there being so many people, we got a table and food very quickly.  On top of all that, the food was fantastic.

Practical Info:   No reservations and the line moves quickly.  Closed on Wednesdays.

Late Morning: Pilates

If you want to plan on a little exercise during your trip, you can drop in for a reformer class at Sol Society Pilates.

This was such a fun activity and made us feel a lot less guilty about indulging in a sweet treat after class at Tous Les Jours next door.

Afternoon:  Exploring Downtown

There's no such thing as spending too much time exploring downtown Ann Arbor, so  whenever you don't have anything specific planned, just walk around and visit all of the different shops.

Main Street Shop Suggestions:  Cherry Republic, Rock Paper Scissors, Rallyhouse, Noteworthy, Rocket Fizz, London Beauty, West Side Book Shop

4th Street Shop Suggestions:  Ferne Boutique, Dear Golden, Literati Bookstore, The Get Up Vintage

Dinner:  Chela's Mexican Restaurant

The main event during our girls' trip was happening at night in Dexter, so we grabbed dinner at Chela's Mexican Restaurant.

This was such a cute place with an extremely friendly staff.  Definitely don't skip their chips and queso!

Night: A Performance at The Encore Theatre

Did you know that just outside of Ann Arbor you can see a Broadway caliber show?

The Encore Theatre, located in Dexter, produces high quality musicals and we had the pleasure of attending a performance of RENT.

What I loved about the entire experience was how intimate the setting was, but also how diverse and talented the cast was.  There was a mix of local performers and students from the university.

I was absolutely blown away and highly recommend seeing a show at The Encore.

Practical Info:   Book your tickets in advance online.  Click here to see the event list.

Day 3: Shopping and Bocce

Morning: Breakfast at Avalon

We found another great spot for breakfast downtown at Avalon.

You can enjoy either breakfast or lunch options and I ended up going with the most savory grilled cheese with tomato basil soup.

Practical Info:   Open 9 am - 2 pm daily.

Late Morning: Shopping Downtown

We spent more time exploring the shops downtown, this time stopping into Cherry Republic (I had no idea that Michigan was so well known for its cherries!), the Rally House, and a crystal store.

We even managed to spot the fairy doors and some incredible murals.

We also got to see the infamous Michigan Theatre Marquee and the State Theatre.

Afternoon: Bocce at Wolverine Pickleball

If you're looking for a fun activity, head out to Wolverine Pickleball where you can enjoy some outdoor games.

Known for their pickleball courts, Wolverine Pickleball also has outdoor volleyball courts, bocce, and Mahjong.

We spent some time playing a few rounds of bocce and had such a great time.

Late Afternoon: Visit the Nichols Arboretum

Nicknamed "The best natural experience in Ann Arbor", The Nichols Arboretum is a great afternoon activity.

You can follow trails and open meadows while you enjoy various species of trees, shrubs, and flowers.

If you love peonies, you have GOT to check out their peony garden.  They even have a tracker so you can find exactly where they are in the bloom process.

Evening: Pre-Dinner Drinks at the AC Hotel Downtown

The bar at the AC Hotel Downtown is so welcoming, to the point that locals have become regulars there in addition to guests staying at the hotel.

The bar staff, including Ian, are incredibly talented and beyond friendly.

Dinner: Union Rec

Another unique restaurant on Main Street downtown is Union Rec.  This eclectic spot has everything from barbecue to tacos and a cozy atmosphere.  We enjoyed some time around the fire before dining in one of their canopy booths.

Night: Drinks Downtown at The Ranch

Ann Arbor is a great town for nightlife with all types of bars and restaurants to go out to for drinks.

On our last night, we stopped at The Ranch Honky Tonk, where they had live music from a band upstairs and a DJ downstairs.

Note:  They have live music Thursday - Sunday!

Day 4: Brunch and Botanical Gardens

Morning: Brunch at The Dixboro Project

It's as if we saved the best for last because The Dixboro Project knocked our socks off with one of the best meals we had all weekend.

The Dixboro Project is made up of Dixboro House (restaurant), The Boro (to-go food), and The Cottage (a rental property).

The restaurant is completely surrounded by nature and the second you walk into the restaurant, the natural light just immediately puts you into a good mood.

We started off with a couple iced lattes, then Jess had a lemon olive oil blueberry muffin that changed her brain chemistry.  From there, we switched to savory mains.  Jess ordered a quiche while I went with steak and eggs (and some mouthwatering crispy potatoes to really seal the deal).

Everything at this restaurant is carefully thought out, and I cannot stress it enough...you have GOT to go eat at The Dixboro Project when you visit Ann Arbor.

Practical Info:   Book a table ahead of time in order to ensure you have a reservation.

Late Morning: The Matthaei Botanical Gardens

After brunch, we experienced true natural beauty at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens.

Here, you can visit The Gardens, The Campus Farm, The Trails, and The Conservatory, where we spent the majority of our time.

There is no shortage of beautiful blooms and they even have a Corpse Flower, which I'd never heard of before.

Practical Info:   Closed on Mondays.  Open 10 am - 4:30 pm Tues - Sun.  Open 10 am - 8:30 pm on Wednesdays.

Afternoon: Explore Kerrytown

Just when we thought the day couldn't get any better, we visited Kerrytown.  This neighborhood completely blew our minds and we had no idea just how close it was to downtown.

Kerrytown is an area of markets and shops as well as restaurants.  Every inch of this area was bright and alive with people.  I was wishing we had more time so that we could really slow down and enjoy every minute of exploring the markets and the individual stores.

We loved browsing through Found, seeing local vendors at the Artisan Market, sampling delicious treats at Zingerman's Deli, and shopping for souvenirs at Catching Fireflies.

Zingerman's deli was my absolute favorite!  The second I walked in, I was personally greeted and even offered a sample of their warm, scrumptious cinnamon rolls.  I wanted to buy everything and luckily, they ship coast to coast, so I didn't have to feel too much pressure to buy it all on the spot.

This entire area was adorable and I would absolutely factor in time here during your visit, especially on the weekends so you can visit the Farmers Market and/or Artisan Market.

Practical Info:   Farmers Market open Saturdays (and Wednesdays May - December).  Artisan Market open on Sundays.

Practical Tips Before You Go

When to visit:   For lighter crowds, avoid major events at The University of Michigan (home football game weekends, graduation, etc.).  Autumn and spring are great for ideal temperatures.

If you visit during spring, you'll get to see downtown lined with tulips, and if you arrive in May/June, the peony garden at the Nichols Arboretum will be blooming.

Getting around:

  • If you have a car:  you don't need a car to get around downtown Ann Arbor because everything is walkable.  If you plan to leave the downtown area, though, a car will be helpful for getting to neighborhoods like Dexter or Dixboro.
  • If you don't have a car:  booking a rideshare is pretty easy when you're downtown.  If you're traveling outside of downtown to areas like Dexter and Dixboro, you may want to arrange your rideshare return ahead of time.  It can be a bit of a wait to get a ride back to downtown Ann Arbor.
