Sidecar Tour Overview

If you’re planning a trip to France and are looking to see the beaches where the Allies landed on D-Day, this is one of the most unique tours you’ll find. In addition to the beaches, you get to make a stop at the Normandy American Cemetery, all while riding from place to place in a vintage sidecar.

Getting to the Meeting Point

My tour guide picked me up in the sidecar in the center of Bayeux, France near the tourist office. I stayed in this small historical city and it was incredibly easy to find the pick up location.

The Experience

The tour begins in Bayeux with a beautiful ride through the French countryside to the first stop at Gold Beach where the British landed on D-Day. The next stop is Longues-sur-Mer; you’ll have the opportunity to see the German artillery batteries.

As you ride from one landmark to the next in the sidecar, other small locations of significance are pointed out.

You’ll then stop at the Normandy American Cemetery where you’ll have the chance to walk through the visitor center and get more information about the D-Day landings. Make your way outside to see the hallowed grounds of almost 9,400 Americans who died during the liberation of France. The rows of white crosses are a sobering visual of all those who sacrificed their lives for freedom.

The final stop
on the tour is Omaha Beach, the landing area of US soldiers on D-Day before heading back to Bayeux.

Takeaway

If you’re looking for a tour of Normandy that’s different from the usual bus tour, I highly recommend hopping in a vintage sidecar with Retro Tour Normandy. Their guides are knowledgeable and friendly and they have other tour options (see below the images) that you can choose from.
